Der vielfach ausgezeichnete und renommierte Fotokünstler arbeitete u.a. für Zeitschriften wie STERN, SPIEGEL, TIME, VanityFair, GEO, National Geographic, Zeitmagazin, FAZ-Magazin sowie SZ-Magazin.
Neben der Publikation von mehr als 70 Büchern und Monographien ist sein umfangreiches Œuvre auch in zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Einzelausstellungen gewürdigt worden.
Unter anderem prägte Dieter Blum das fotografische Image der Marlboro-Werbung sowie namhafter Industrieunternehmen wie DAIMLER, Porsche, Shell, ABB, Bilfinger, Festo und Jaeger LeCoultre.
Er erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, darunter 1982 den ersten Preis im „World Press Photo“ für seine Reportage über die Berliner Philharmoniker unter Herbert von Karajan, sowie 3 photokina-Obelisken.
2015 wurde Blum in Paris die Médaille Vermeil der Art-Science-Lettres für sein Lebenswerk verliehen.
